New Business
- Multi-town bikeways drop in meeting. Carol Dobek reported on this meeting which was held on Feb 11, 2011. This is a temporary group for towns to discuss mutual biking concerns and help each other. Topics included Mass Bike week and Orleans Coast to Coast. The group will meet again on March 3, 2011 and Carol will attend. There is an upcoming similar group meeting on March 16, 2011 in Hyannis. Carol showed copies of a small laminated yellow card listing principles of safety for bicycles and autos operating on the same roadways.
- Bike repair demonstration. Paul Schofield talked with Idle Times owner Peter Noble-Cass and got his approval for the event. It would last about two hours and include cleaning and lube, changing a flat tire, fitting a bike to the rider, tools and spare parts to carry with a bike. This would need to be held in an enclosed place and on a single date with no postponement. It was agreed to aim for May 7. Lois Roth-Johnson will contact the town and coordinate the approvals that will be needed.
Old Business
- Boy Scout clean-up project has been postponed until spring. It was reported that DCR has recently done some trimming along parts of the trail.
- Eastham bike month event. “Eastham Waterways” ride from First Encounter Beach to Nauset Light Beach will be held on May 14 at 8:30 AM and has been approved by the Town. Co-chairs Sheri Cocchiola and Carol Dobek discussed publicity via schools, Nauset Newcomers, police and newspapers. Carol and Sheri will arrange for posters, letters and forms for the schools and need for permission slips. Co-advertising the May 21 Orleans event with ours was discussed. Judy Parmelee will contact Head Ranger Bob Grant at CCNS, as the route includes Cable Road, a park road. Lois Roth-Johnson will check with the town regarding possible need for waivers and permission slips for children. Carol will contact Orleans for suggestions. Sheri will check with police about coverage. Newspapers will be contacted in mid-April.
There should have enough money in our account to cover cost of advertising. Bikeways members’ roles at the event were discussed and will be finalized in April.
Other Business
- It was reported that pieces of the retaining wall south of the tunnel on the Rail Trail have fallen. Lois will check the site and contact Jon Petersen at Nickerson State Park if needed.
- Kathy Herrick announced that she has notified the town that she will not seek reappointment when her term ends in June. She has served on the Committee for four years.
The Committee will meet next on April 6, 2011 at 8:15 AM.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 AM.
Respectfully submitted,
Judy Parmelee, Clerk
